Dental Foundation Training

Why choose us:

  • You will gain experience in MOS. We are a regional training and NHS referral centre for Minor Oral Surgery.
  • You will gain experience in implants. We accept private referrals for implants.
  • You will gain experience in orthodontics/facial aesthetics/cosmetic dentistry.
  • You will be able to shadow at our sister practices.
  • You will be supported with your further studies including MFDS/MJDF.
  • You will be supported with application to speciality training.
  • Offer of an associate job at the end of your foundation training year.
  • The practice is fully COVID secure. We have separate Don/Doff rooms for removing PPE. All of our surgeries have powerful air extractors fitted creating negative pressure rooms, this allows fallow time to be minimised to a maximum of 10 minutes.
  • Your surgery is bright, spacious and has all of the latest technology, including electric motor <40000rpm, meaning all procedures can be classed as Non- AGPs.
  • Excellent transport links and parking available onsite. The practice is located 1 minute walk from the metro and bus interchange.

Health Education England North East 

As part of Health Education England North East  your study days will be based at the dedicated, state-of-the-art dental education centre at Bourne House near of Durham. Here you can find an ultra-modern clinical skills unit with 14 phantom head units, 2 surgeries and an x-ray room. The directorate offers high quality training right from the very start of your career through to your later years as a dental professional. The population of the North East benefits from the highest rate of access to NHS dental services in the country: because of this, we are able to offer comprehensive and varied training experience tailored to your needs.

Educational Supervisors

Gavin Venchard

(Educational Supervisor at 1a Dentist)

Gavin qualified from Newcastle Dental School. Since graduating he has been involved in Research, Undergraduate and Postgraduate teaching in General Dental Practice, University and Hospital settings. He has been a Dental Foundation Training Educational Supervisor for over 25 years. Almost all of his previous trainees have stayed on for further experience and mentoring at his practices before moving on to academia, specialist training and practice ownership both in the UK and abroad.

 

Gavin prides himself on being an all round dentist, with a keen interest in oral surgery and sedation. He has been placing and restoring dental implants for over 25 years and was one of the first dentists in the North East to become an accredited Invisalign provider and facial aesthetics practitioner.

 

Gavin’s passion for teaching extends beyond the dental setting. Outside of work he is a ski instructor, Ski Club of Great Britain Rep and a keen cyclist.

James Robinson

James qualified from Newcastle Dental School in 2001.

 

James is one of Gavin’s former Foundation Dentists. He is now a partner at 1a Dentist and our sister practice, Greencroft Lodge, Rowlands Gill.

 

He has worked and taught at the dental hospital and been involved in Foundation Training for over 15 years.

 

James is an experienced General Dental Practitioner with interests in restorative and cosmetic dentistry, sedation, acupuncture, and orthodontics. He is Invisalign, Inman Aligner & Six Month Smiles accredited.

 

Outside of work James is a Foundation level 2 cricket coach and helps in the running of the Juniors at Benwell Hill Cricket club.

Ian Chandler

(Educational Supervisor at 1a Dentist)

Ian qualified from Newcastle Dental School in 2014.

 

Ian was one of James’ former Foundation Dentists at Acorn Dental Surgery in Jesmond. After completing foundation training, he worked alongside Gavin and James at Acorn Dental Surgery in Gosforth before becoming partner at 1a Dentist where he is responsible for the management of the practice.

 

Ian is an experienced general dental practitioner with interests in endodontics, cosmetic dentistry, sedation and orthodontics. He is also an accredited Invisalign provider.

 

Outside of work Ian enjoys keeping fit and is a keen skier.  He is former swimming and lifesaving teacher .

Asmed Nojib

Asmed qualified from Newcastle Dental School in 1998. He has worked at the dental hospital and been involved in foundation training for several years.

 

Asmed is another of  Gavin’s former Foundation Dentists. He is also a partner at 1a Dentist and our sister practice, Greencroft Lodge, Rowlands Gill.

 

He is an experienced sedation operator, having completed Advanced Intravenous Sedation training. He has also been trained in the delivery of anti-wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers, as well as orthodontic systems including Clearstep, QuickStraight Teeth and Invisalign. He is currently undertaking advanced facial aesthetic training, including non-surgical rhinoplasty, tear troughs and cheek enhancements.

 

Asmed on his own has built and owns an impressive network of general and specialist practice in the North East of England, including Neo Orthodontics Newcastle and Ashington and general dental practices in North Shields, Seaham and Sunderland.

 

When not hard at work, Asmed enjoys cycling, travel and film. He also likes tinkering with cars and digging out his pans for cooking his favourite dishes. He is married to Nasreen and has two children.

Paul Edwards

(Educational Supervisor at Greencroft Lodge)

Paul graduated from Newcastle University in 2010 and two years later passed his membership exam to the Glasgow Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.

 

He has worked in both hospital and practice settings throughout his career. In hospital, he has worked as a General Professional Trainee/House Officer, Senior House Officer and Speciality Doctor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery; pursuing his special interest in Oral Surgery.

 

Paul has a keen interest in teaching. Until recently, he taught undergraduate dental students each week on the Dental Emergency Clinic at Newcastle Dental Hospital. In practice, he is also an Educational Supervisor for postgraduate Foundation Dentists.

 

He has partaken in clinical research, publishing several papers in international journals, as well as presenting his research at national and international conferences.

 

Paul has a postgraduate certificate from Sheffield University in Dental Implants. He enjoys a mix of general and surgical dentistry, placing and restoring dental implants in our practice, performing minor oral surgery to remove impacted wisdom teeth and other teeth.
